Why we need an office of men’s health | Health & Fitness

Dear Healthy Men: More than a year ago, I read a column of yours that mentioned that while there are several Offices of Women’s Health in the federal government, there isn’t a corresponding Office of Men’s Health. Is that still true? And if not, why not?

A: The answer to your first question is easy: There are still five federally funded Offices of Women’s Health: at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA). The combined annual budgets of these offices is in the tens of millions of dollars. In addition, the Office of Research for Women’s Health within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) – one of several research agencies focusing exclusively on women’s health – has a $5 billion annual budget.

Religious Vaccine Exemption Stays for NY Health Care Workers | New York News

Religious Vaccine Exemption Stays for NY Health Care Workers | New York News

By MICHAEL HILL, Associated Press

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York health care workers will be able to seek religious exemptions from a statewide COVID-19 vaccine mandate as a lawsuit challenging the requirement proceeds, a federal judge ruled Tuesday.

Judge David Hurd in Utica had issued a temporary restraining order a month ago after 17 doctors, nurses and other health professionals claimed in a lawsuit that their rights would be violated with a vaccine mandate that disallowed religious exemptions.

Hurd’s preliminary injunction Tuesday means New York will continue to be barred from enforcing any requirement that employers deny religious exemptions. And the state cannot revoke exemptions already granted.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said she will fight the decision in court “to keep New Yorkers safe.”

Political Cartoons

“My responsibility as governor is to protect the people of this state, and requiring health care workers to get vaccinated accomplishes that,” she said in a prepared statement.

State health officials said that as of Tuesday, facilities reported 7,070 hospital workers, or 1.4% of total employees, had claimed a non-medical exemption, as did 2,636 nursing home workers, or 1.8% of employees.

Hurd wrote that the health care workers suing the state were likely to succeed on the merits of their constitutional claim. The question presented in this case, Hurd wrote, is whether the mandate “conflicts with plaintiffs’ and other individuals’ federally protected right to seek a religious accommodation from their individual employers. The answer to this question is clearly yes.”

“This is clearly just a ridiculous government overreach,” said Christopher Ferrara, the Thomas More Society special counsel who represented the plaintiffs. “You can’t do this to people. You can’t call them heroes one day and then throw them out on the sidewalk the next day.”

Hochul’s administration began requiring workers at hospitals and nursing homes to be vaccinated on Sept. 27 and more recently expanded the requirement to include workers at assisted living homes, hospice care, treatment centers and home health aides.

The plaintiffs, all Christians, oppose as a matter of religious conviction any medical cooperation in abortion, including the use of vaccines linked to fetal cell lines in testing, development or production, according to court papers.

Several types of cell lines created decades ago using fetal tissue exist and are widely used in medical manufacturing, but the cells in them today are clones of the early cells, not the original tissue.

Tulsa’s historic Greenwood District adds outdoor fitness park to promote health and well-being | Local News

As part of a nationwide effort to put outdoor exercise areas in all 50 states, the AARP opened a fitness park this week in Tulsa’s historic Greenwood District.

The fitness center, located at 698 E. Jasper St. in the B.S. Roberts Park near Langston University-Tulsa, features elliptical machines, pull-up bars, stair steppers and other equipment for cardiovascular exercise and strength training.

The equipment was designed for all ages and abilities and is free to use, the AARP said.

“Health and well-being are central to our lives,” said AARP CEO Jo Ann Jenkins, adding that outdoor fitness parks have become “particularly important as we navigate new phases of staying active during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Each piece of equipment will have a QR code that can be scanned with a smartphone to link to instructional videos. Instructor-led fitness

Medical student creates app for improving transgender individuals’ experience with health care

Medical student creates app for improving transgender individuals’ experience with health care

Rutgers is endorsing the beta launch of TranZap, a web-based application designed by a Rutgers medical student for the transgender community to leave reviews for health care providers, according to a press release.

Taylor Chiang, co-creator of TranZap and a second-year student at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, discussed their role in the project and what made them want to create this resource.

They said that as a transgender individual, they think many aspects of health care need improvement in terms of treating the transgender community.

“A lot of the time, trans folks do avoid health care because they are afraid of the barriers that they might face,” Chiang said. “Those barriers can include financial barriers like straight-up access to care, but also discrimination, harassment, trying to explain what it means to be transgender, microaggressions, things like that. I think a lot of those things are off-putting to trans folks in terms of just seeking everyday care.”

Their role has consisted of advertising, creating protocols, getting feedback and more while the co-founder, Eli Lucherini, a doctoral candidate at Princeton University, has been working on the web development and coding for the app, Chiang said.

When inquiring over social media about which aspects of health care need improvement to the transgender community, Chiang often heard from community members that they do not know where to get suitable referrals or find gender-affirming health care providers, they said.

To address these issues, the app contains two main features, which are the ability to leave a review of a health care provider one has recently seen and the ability to look up those reviews once they have been left in the app, Chiang said. People can also browse for a particular physician.

Chiang said they like to see the app as similar to Yelp, except for transgender people and specific to health care. They said the reviews that are left on TranZap cover the overall experience of transgender patients with certain health care providers and answer specific questions to crowdsource information in one place.

“Did this provider ask what your preferred name was? Did this provider ask what your pronouns were? Did they use the pronouns once they asked what those pronouns were?’” Chiang said. “Those are very easy yes or no questions — they either did it or they didn’t do it — and we had some other questions that people

Types of Dentists: General Dental Professionals and Periodontist

People may or may not know that various types of dental professionals care for people’s oral health. These experts are highly trained medical service providers who specialize in treating a person’s mouth and teeth. Oral health is very important to a person’s overall health, and it might contribute to different conditions and diseases like endocarditis, pneumonia, cardiovascular diseases, birth, and pregnancy complications.

Why are various kinds of dental professionals needed?

Over the years, a lot of patients have asked experts what the difference is among various specialists and general dentists. Some also ask why one clinic does not have all the kinds of dentists working under the same roof. We need to think about it this way: pregnant women see their obstetrician-gynecologists for their annual check-up.

For more info about OB-GYNs, click here for details.

These professionals can perform breast examinations and pap smears and care for them when they are pregnant and about to deliver their babies. Some physicians in this specialty choose to only practice gynecology and not obstetrics.

Say the pregnant woman receives questionable test results during their annual examination, and their unknown mass appears to be cancerous. The patient would see an OB-GYN, who would only see patients diagnosed with cancer and practice in separate clinics.

Not only that, obstetrician-gynecologist and gynecologic oncologists perform a lot of procedures, use many different supplies and equipment, and see their patients with various emotional needs, which is an excellent decision to have subspecialties under different clinics. It is the same with how different types of dental professionals can work. To understand the various kinds of dentists, here is a basic explanation of the education and focus needed for each profession:

Education required for different kinds of dentists

The dental school is a 4-year post-grad program to get a degree which is either a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD), depending on what school a person attends. After graduation, the dentist needs to take a state board examination to become a licensed professional in the state they are planning to operate.

Suppose someone wants to be a specialist in this industry. In that case, they need to attend a residency program in the same field, in addition to the education that medical physicians need for their specialties. Let us now explore the various kinds of dentists …
